A young worker lost his life following a powerful explosion that occurred this morning at a vinegar production and packaging plant in Examilia, Corinthia.
A total of five employees were on the premises at the time of the explosion. Four managed to evacuate in time, while the fifth was unable to escape from the factory. His body was located by fire service personnel during the firefighting operation.
A man carrying out work on a neighbouring property was also injured in the explosion. According to the available information, he was struck by debris hurled beyond the factory grounds and was taken to hospital.
The Corinth Arson Crimes Investigation Unit has been dispatched to the scene and is investigating the causes of the fire and explosion.
A major fire broke out inside the factory following the explosion, spreading rapidly and causing extensive damage to the premises. The operation involved 32 firefighters with ten vehicles, as well as a ground crew. The blaze was brought under control and, according to the mayor of Corinth, had been extinguished by midday.
The mayor said the explosion was particularly powerful, with parts of the factory’s metal structure thrown a considerable distance. He added that the evidence gathered so far suggests the blast occurred in one of the vinegar tanks. However, the exact cause and the circumstances surrounding the incident have yet to be established.
