United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres met President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia this morning, during the first visit to the island by a UN Secretary-General since 2010. The visit is aimed at relaunching negotiations between the two sides on the Cyprus issue.
“If there is a moment when resolving the Cyprus issue is important, it is now, at a time of chaos in the region and amid geopolitical changes that could suddenly place Cyprus at the centre of unwelcome developments,” Guterres said at the start of the meeting at the Presidential Palace.
António Guterres has served as UN Secretary-General since 2017, and his second and final term ends on 31 December 2026.
Following the meeting, he stressed that “there is a strong commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue” and added that he would do everything in his power to move the process forward.
The UN Secretary-General also met Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. In the evening, he is expected to attend a private dinner with the two leaders, while a joint meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow at Nicosia Airport.
António Guterres is accompanied by his Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín, who also held separate meetings with Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhürman.
