The three people arrested over the deadly explosion at a vinegar production plant in Examilia, Corinthia, are being brought before the prosecutor today. The blast killed a 67-year-old external contractor working with the company and left a 37-year-old man with minor injuries.
Those arrested are the company owner, the safety officer and the operations manager. They were detained under the summary arrest procedure as being responsible for the conditions in which the explosion and subsequent fire occurred. Any specific criminal liability will be determined by the prosecutorial and investigative authorities.
According to the information available so far, the 67-year-old was carrying out welding work a short distance from an LPG supply installation. The relevant authorities are examining whether a propane pipeline was damaged during the work or whether there had already been a leak of flammable gas that was ignited by a spark or another source of heat.
This is the second fatal workplace explosion within a month, following the blast at a repair shop in Aspropyrgos that killed a 59-year-old worker.
The explosion occurred at around 1:30 p.m. The force of the blast was reportedly heard up to 20 kilometres away, with reports coming from Loutra Oraias Elenis and Zevgolatio. The plant was operating at the time, with a total of five employees on the premises. The fire that followed was extinguished, while the authorities collected evidence from the scene.
A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the competent Fire Service investigative unit in order to establish the sequence of events, the safety measures in place and any possible omissions. This was the second fatal workplace explosion in July, following the incident at a truck repair shop in Aspropyrgos, where a 59-year-old worker died after several days in hospital.
