Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, are expected in Washington today for talks at the White House. Their visit comes as Kyiv seeks to reinforce its stance, after Donald Trump openly urged Ukraine to accept territorial concessions in the wake of his high-profile meeting with Vladimir Putin.

The gathering marks the first such summit in this format since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. It follows a fresh wave of deadly Russian strikes overnight against Ukrainian cities, adding urgency to the discussions.

The Trump-Putin meeting, held Friday in Alaska, has been described by analysts as a serious blow to Ukraine and its European allies.

Trump has made clear he does not foresee Ukraine reclaiming Crimea or joining NATO, insisting instead that Kyiv accept Moscow’s demands.

According to reports, Trump has endorsed Russia’s position that Ukraine should cede the entirety of Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, and accept a frozen frontline in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Russia announced the annexation of these regions in September 2022, despite never fully controlling them militarily. [1], [2], [3]

Zelenskyy has so far rejected any such concessions, reiterating that Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are non-negotiable.
