More than 20 wildfires are currently burning across the country, with strong to gale-force winds hampering firefighting operations and, in several cases, limiting the use of aerial resources.
The most serious situation is in Boeotia, where the Xironomi front is burning out of control and has caused damage to agricultural facilities and livestock farms. In Agios Vasileios, around 500 residents and visitors were evacuated by sea after the flames surrounded the settlement and cut off a safe road escape route.
In southern Rethymno, the situation has improved, although flare-ups continue.
The wildfire spread westwards, prompting authorities to issue a new 112 emergency alert ordering people in Prosili and Porto Germeno to evacuate via Vilia towards Mandra. Earlier alerts had ordered the evacuation of Agios Vasileios towards Kaparelli and restricted visitor access to Porto Germeno. Traffic restrictions remain in force across the wider area.
In Argolis, the fire front in Fichti remains active, with reinforced firefighting forces and the evacuation of the village of Borsa. The fire in Chinitsa was brought under control after residents were evacuated as a precaution.
New fires broke out in Haidari, on Mount Poikilo in Attica, in Komboti, Arta, and in Agia Anna, Evia, while there is no longer an active front in Floka, Achaia. In southern Rethymno, the situation has improved, although flare-ups continue. The fires on Paros, Andros and Kalymnos have been brought under control.
