More than 20 wildfires are currently burning across the country, according to Fire Service deputy spokesperson Giannis Artopios. Authorities have described today as particularly difficult due to strong winds and the simultaneous deployment of firefighting forces across multiple fronts.
The greatest concern is focused on Boeotia, where the fire in the Agios Vasileios area is advancing on two active fronts and has already prompted the evacuation of three settlements. Winds are driving the flames towards residential areas, while vessels have also been mobilised for the possible evacuation of residents from the coastline. Traffic remains suspended on the Thebes–Domvraina provincial road.
The fire in Fichti, Argolis, is also considered difficult. It broke out at around 10:00 and is close to residential areas. A total of 48 firefighters, 13 vehicles, forest commando units, four aircraft and one helicopter are operating at the scene.
The head of network operations at HEDNO has been arrested in connection with the wildfire in southern Rethymno.
In Rethymno, the wildfire is continuing for a third day, with two active fronts in Krya Vrysi and Preveli and around 4,500 hectares of land burned, including part of the Preveli Palm Forest. Strong winds are preventing the use of aerial firefighting means, while ground forces are dealing with repeated flare-ups. The head of network operations at HEDNO Rethymno has been arrested in connection with the case.
In the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, the situation has improved on Andros and Kalymnos. On Paros, however, active hotspots and flare-ups remain within the fire perimeter, following a blaze that burned more than 1,200 hectares.
New or active fronts have also been reported in Floka, Achaia, Archontochori, Aetolia-Acarnania, and Megalopolis, Arcadia. According to the Fire Service, the most difficult fires remain those in Boeotia, Argolis and Achaia.
