The vice-presidential candidates from the Democratic and Republican parties, Tim Walz (Senator from Minnesota) and J.D. Vance (Senator from Ohio), met yesterday in their first and only debate, five weeks ahead of the November elections.
The debate was mild and civil [1], [2], [3], a departure from what the public had come to expect from presidential debates. Walz and Vance focused on policy and avoided personal attacks, directing the conversation toward issues such as the Middle East, the economy, immigration, abortion, and climate change.
According to CBS, which aired the debate, 42% of viewers said Vance won, 41% said Walz won, and 17% saw it as a tie.
The most heated exchange occurred when Vance said he would not certify the 2020 presidential election results and avoided answering when asked if he would contest this year’s election results should Trump lose.
Walz accused Trump of inciting the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot with his false claims of election fraud.
According to the ΝΥΤ, neither candidate provided anything likely to influence the election outcome significantly. Still, both succeeded in following the “golden rule” of vice-presidential debates: not to harm their running mates.
