Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, after talks that he had with the president of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, and the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Lebanese state was not an active part of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, over which the government of Beirut has very limited control. However, Hezbollah also seems to have accepted the agreement, as one of its MPs attributed the agreement to the “Iranian diplomatic efforts” and stated that Hezbollah will respect the truce, as long as Israel does not proceed to hostilities.
Although the terms of the agreement forbid offensive actions by Israel, room is given for “self-defense” even for “imminent or planned actions”, while bombings by Israel in Lebanon also followed.
The ceasefire agreement in Lebanon constitutes part of the broader peace talks for the war of the US-Israel in Iran.
At the same time, the Lebanese army warned residents who had been displaced from southern Lebanon not to return yet to their homes, because of the bombings that were reported.
At the same time, Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that the IDF will remain in South Lebanon in a “security zone” close to their borders. He stated that the ceasefire offers an opportunity for a “historic peace agreement”, but insisted that the disarmament of Hezbollah remains a precondition.
Lebanon will likely demand the full withdrawal of the Israeli forces, something that Israel has in the past rejected categorically.
