Average daily vehicle traffic on Attiki Odos rose by 5.5% in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 and by 9.5% for the full year of 2023 compared to 2022. Traffic in 2023 was also 9.8% higher than in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year.
In 2023, average traffic reached around 259,000 crossings per day, with June and July recording the highest volumes: 293,000 in June (a 10% increase from 2022) and 285,000 in July (an 11% increase). This rise was due to travel to vacation homes, beaches, and the airport. May, October, and November also saw increased traffic, while August recorded the lowest.
According to a survey by fyi.news in collaboration with IMET, 40.9% of Athenians choose to use private vehicles despite traffic and costs.
Peak traffic hours on Attiki Odos are from 8–9 a.m. and 5–6 p.m., with Friday seeing the highest number of crossings.
Traffic Management Advisor K. Logothetis told “Kathimerini” that traffic on Attiki Odos has risen to the point that congestion lengths sometimes match those on Kifisos Avenue. The city’s ring road restrictions also add pressure, as drivers use Attiki Odos to bypass the city center.
According to transport engineer Or. Karountzos, the large number of areas the motorway serves, increased congestion on other roads, and limited public transport options make Attiki Odos the “only option” for many drivers despite tolls and heavier traffic than in past years.
