The prosecutor has requested the conviction of the main defendant for the murder of police officer G. Lygeridis during the incidents outside the “Melina Mercouri” volleyball stadium in Rendi in December 2023.
According to the prosecutor’s statement, the 19-year-old defendant remains “provocatively unrepentant, arrogantly bold, and by his absence, disrespects the court.”
The prosecutor noted that there was a plan to attack the police officers and that the defendant targeted them directly, where G. Lygeridis was, when he fired the naval flare that fatally injured him. She also highlighted that the attackers had murderous intent toward the MAT officers, which is further evidenced by their abusive remarks (“we will kill you”).
The trial will continue on Wednesday, April 9, and the court’s decision is expected to be issued at that time.
He also stated that “before the attack, a large number of improvised explosive devices, Molotov cocktails, and other items were made in a warehouse at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium to be thrown at the police officers. The weapons were loaded into four cars, including the car driven by the defendant, and they proceeded to the Melina Mercouri stadium.”
The father of the murdered George Lygeridis spoke after the prosecutor’s proposal, according to ERT, about a small sense of relief he felt after a long time, while his mother remarked that it was a murderous attack directed not only at her son but at all police officers “who are doing their job.”
