The collapse of an apartment building in Germasogeia last Saturday, which resulted in 2 dead and 3 injured, highlights the serious risk from old and dangerous buildings in the wider area of Limassol.

Thus, the authorities are called to assign responsibilities and to take immediate measures, so that similar incidents are avoided in the future, as many buildings are considered dangerous.

The mayor of Amathounta, Kyriakos Xydias, requested that it be investigated whether internal changes were made to the building that may have affected its stability. According to data, the apartment building had received the first warning letter already from 2017. Additionally, on 1 April 2025, when the responsibilities passed to the Limassol EOA, a total of 9 dangerous apartment buildings had been recorded in the area.

The criminal liability for those who do not comply is being examined, as well as the possibility of cutting off electricity and water.

Many of the buildings are 50 to 60 years old and have been constructed with sea sand and, despite the risk, several owners do not proceed to the necessary repairs.

The main problem is the difficulty of enforcing measures, as the procedures are time-consuming and costly, while Kyriakos Xydias proposes the creation of a registry of apartment buildings and the carrying out of mandatory periodic inspections.

Also, the criminal liability for those who do not comply is being examined, as well as the possibility of cutting off electricity and water.
