Two armed men shot and killed at least 15 people yesterday, Sunday, December 14, at Sydney’s Bondi Beach in Australia, where people had gathered for the Jewish Hanukkah celebration.
The attackers in the anti-Semitic attack were a father and his son, Naveed and Sajid Akram. The father was killed during a shootout with police, while the son was arrested.
The New South Wales Police and the Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, Mike Burgess, said on Sunday that one of the attackers was known to authorities “but not as an immediate threat.”
A bystander managed to subdue and disarm one of the attackers, preventing him from killing more people.
Police reported that 13 of the victims died at the scene, while two others, a 10-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man, died later in hospital. In addition, 42 people, including four children, were taken to hospitals across Sydney.
The father reportedly held a firearms license, and the Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, said that changes to gun laws are “almost certain” to follow.
During the attack, a bystander intervened to stop and disarm one of the attackers, preventing further killings.
