Scientific studies have shown that experts studying animals—from wild deer to insects, monkeys, and birds—have gained insights into the link between age and social bonds. They observe that animals, like humans, become less social as they age.
Competition is one factor that may contribute to reduced sociability as animals grow older.
In one study, researchers analyzed data from over 150 species, finding that more social species tend to live longer, have extended generational spans, and longer reproductive windows.
Research on macaques showed that older animals could lower their risk of death from disease by reducing their social interactions.
“Overall, there seems to be a broad pattern that animals become less social with age,” said Josh Ferth from the University of Leeds, adding that the research explored potential causes and effects, showing that this trend has both costs and benefits.

Although reduced social connections are often viewed negatively—particularly for humans—they can also have advantages. A modeling study based on observed social interactions in a species of rhesus macaque found that older animals could reduce their risk of contracting diseases, especially those more severe for their age group, by having fewer contacts with other animals.
