fyi:
  1. During a cybersecurity test conducted in a “secure digital sandbox,” two OpenAI models broke out of the controlled environment and independently hacked a startup.
  2. They targeted Hugging Face, an AI model platform and database, because they believed it contained useful information that would help them complete the assigned test.
  3. OpenAI described the incident as “unprecedented” but expects similar cases to become increasingly common as AI models grow more capable.

Two advanced OpenAI artificial intelligence models breached the systems of startup Hugging Face during an internal cybersecurity evaluation. According to OpenAI, an autonomous agent combined GPT-5.6 Sol with a more powerful, unreleased model, with certain safety safeguards reduced for the purposes of the test.

The models were operating in an isolated environment with tightly restricted network access. However, they identified vulnerabilities both in OpenAI’s code and in Hugging Face’s systems, gaining access to the platform’s database, where they searched for solutions to the test they were trying to complete.

The EU’s 27 leaders are expected to hold their first dedicated discussion on AI sometime in 2026, according to Politico.

OpenAI says the systems were “hyper-focused” on achieving their goal of passing the evaluation. The company argues that this does not mean they developed consciousness or malicious intent. It does, however, show that an agent can bypass intended restrictions and choose unauthorized actions in order to maximize its performance. The company described the incident as “unprecedented,” but expects similar cases to become increasingly common as AI models grow more capable. Hugging Face said the attack, which it successfully stopped, involved thousands of simultaneous actions.

The incident adds to the growing debate over artificial intelligence safety. In the European Union, the issue is expected to reach the highest political level, as Politico reports that Antonio Costa is preparing a special discussion among the EU’s 27 leaders on the opportunities and risks of AI in 2026, with a focus on security, competitiveness and digital sovereignty.
