The prosecutor at the Mixed Jury Court of Karditsa recommended that the police officers accused of torturing Vasilis Mangos at Volos Police Headquarters be found guilty of torture and exposing a person to danger.
According to Omnia, the prosecutor concluded that Mangos’s serious injuries, including six fractured ribs and liver damage, resulted from violence he suffered during his transfer to and detention at the police station, following his beating outside the Volos courthouse on June 14, 2020.
Regarding the charge of exposing a person to danger, the prosecutor said that Mangos’s serious condition was apparent to the officers, who failed to help him despite his request to be taken to hospital.
She also rejected claims that his injuries were pre-existing or resulted solely from the beating outside the courthouse, citing medical reports and witness testimony.
On the charge of dangerous bodily harm during his transfer in the police vehicle, she recommended guilty verdicts for the two officers sitting beside him and the acquittal of the officer in the front passenger seat on that specific charge. She also recommended that all defendants be found guilty of the violence inflicted inside police headquarters.
Regarding the charge of exposing a person to danger, she stressed that Mangos’s serious medical condition was evident to the officers, who failed to assist him despite his request to be taken to hospital.
