Seven journalists have been killed in Pakistan in the first half of 2024, marking a record number of fatalities.
The most recent victim was journalist Khalil Jibrano, who was assassinated in June when two individuals dragged him out of his car and shot him.
Adil Jawad, who works for an organization investigating journalist assassinations, explains that these attacks happen amid “widespread impunity” for the perpetrators. He also notes that at least 4 of the 7 journalist deaths directly relate to their professional activities.
FYI: Between 2012 and 2022, 53 journalists were killed because of their work, yet there were convictions in only two cases, according to the Freedom Network.
According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists investigating cases of corruption or illegal trafficking.
“Any journalist who crosses the red lines set by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) – the military’s media wing – risks becoming the target of intense surveillance, which can lead to abduction and detention in state prisons or unofficial detention centers for varying periods,” RSF adds.
Most of the killings have occurred in smaller cities, where the impact of social media has greatly amplified the role of professional journalists and given a voice to citizen journalists.
