The plans for filming at the Acropolis for Giorgos Lanthimos’s new film Bugonia have been definitively canceled, following the official communication of the Central Archaeological Council’s (KAS) largely negative opinion to the production company “Either Or Productions” yesterday. The opinion stated that the proposed scenes “are incompatible with the symbolism and values represented by the Acropolis, and especially the Parthenon,” according to Kathimerini.
Bugonia is a remake of a Korean film, and the rejected scene was set to depict 70 corpses between the Propylaea and the Parthenon.
The Ministry had proposed alternative locations near the Acropolis, such as the Pnyx and Philopappos hills, the Areopagus pedestrian street, and others. However, the production stated in meetings with the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) that the ideal choice was the Acropolis. The scene would have shown 70 corpses between the Propylaea and the Parthenon and was to be a central part of the film, a remake of the Korean film Save the Green Planet (2003), starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Meanwhile, the production dismissed staff hired for the project and canceled the equipment rental. The cancellation of the filming means the public will now be able to visit the Acropolis as usual from April 10 to April 14, during which time ticket sales had been partially “frozen.”
