The government of the Basque Country, autonomous community of Spain, asks from Madrid for the work “Guernica” of Pablo Picasso to be hosted in Bilbao, for the 90 years since the bombing of the Basque city Guernica.

The regional president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, replied that it does not make sense for all works to return to their place of origin and stressed that there is risk of damage of it in a possible transfer of it.

“It does not make sense for everything to return to its place of origin,” said Ayuso. “In this case, we would have to send all the works of Picasso to Malaga,” she added, referring to the city where he was born.

The “Guernica” of Picasso depicts the bombing of it by the Nazis and the Italians, allies of the dictator Franco, in the Spanish civil war in 1937.

“This reflects a provincial mentality, at a time when culture is universal,” she said, adding that the Reina Sofía insists that the movement of “Guernica” involves risk of damage of the work.

Imanol Pradales, president of the Basque Country, replied that “they took Franco out of his grave and they are not able to move a painting from Madrid to Euskadi [the Basque Country]? The ball is in their court”.

The Basque government wishes the painting to be exhibited in the Guggenheim museum of Bilbao from 1 October to 30 June, in the context of the events for the completion of 90 years since the bombing of Guernica.
