US President Donald Trump’s special envoy and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel today to push for the implementation of the US plan for the Gaza Strip, which Netanyahu said days ago he “rejects.”
On Sunday, Kushner met with Hamas’s political leader in Egypt, among others. Hamas has said since late July that it accepts the 15-point US plan, which is intended to begin the “second phase” of the ceasefire.
The second phase calls for Hamas to disarm in exchange for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops, which currently control more than half of the Gaza Strip.
Since agreeing to a ceasefire on 10 October 2025, Israel has killed more than 1,200 Palestinians in Gaza and injured more than 4,100.
Several regional powers, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s rejection of the plan. “Israel now bears responsibility for obstructing efforts to achieve peace in Gaza,” the statement said. Jordan, Pakistan, Indonesia and the ceasefire mediators were also among the signatories.
Israel will hold national elections on 27 October, giving voters their first opportunity to pass judgment on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition since the 7 October 2023 attacks.
