The European Athletics Championships in Birmingham and the European Aquatics Championships in Paris concluded yesterday. The athletics championships ran from 10 to 16 August, while the aquatics championships took place from 31 July to 16 August.
In athletics, Greece won two medals, one gold and one silver. The latest was Emmanouil Karalis’s silver in the pole vault yesterday. Karalis challenged Armand Duplantis for gold, but the Swede won his fourth consecutive European title, setting a championship record of 6.15m.
Karalis cleared 6.00m before attempting 6.20m in a bid for gold, but was unsuccessful.
Italy topped the medal table in both athletics and aquatics, with 22 and 43 medals respectively.
Greece’s athletics gold came from Miltiadis Tentoglou in the long jump last week, with a jump of 8.44m. It was his fourth European long jump title, a record for the event. He had previously shared the record with Soviet athlete Igor Ter-Ovanesyan.
In aquatics, Greece won five medals. Apostolos Christou took gold in the 100m backstroke, sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini Alexandri won gold in both the duet technical and free routines, while Apostolos Siskos won silver in the 200m backstroke and bronze in the 200m butterfly.
