A 41-year-old man accused of killing his 39-year-old wife in Kalamata is expected to appear before an investigating judge today. The case has been recorded as the fifth femicide in Greece since the beginning of 2026. He has been charged with intentional homicide.

The victim, a 39-year-old mother of two young children, was found dead in the family’s apartment in the early hours of Monday morning. Shortly before 2 a.m., neighbors alerted police after reportedly hearing a woman calling for help from inside the residence.

When officers arrived at the scene, the suspect initially claimed that his wife had injured herself. He later confessed to the killing, alleging that he acted in self-defense following a confrontation between the couple.

Since 2020, 77 femicides have been recorded in Greece, with yesterday’s killing marking the fifth such case of 2026.

However, investigators have questioned this account. According to reports, no signs of a struggle were found at the scene, while the victim sustained multiple injuries. Authorities are also awaiting the final forensic examination results, which are expected to provide further clarity regarding the circumstances of the crime.

The couple’s two children, aged 10 and 6, were in a neighboring room at the time of the incident. Authorities have requested blood tests to determine whether they had been given any substance or medication that could explain why they did not wake up or become aware of what was happening. During the search of the apartment, police reportedly discovered a package of anti-anxiety/sedative medication.

According to law enforcement officials, no formal reports of domestic violence had previously been filed. However, local residents told investigators that the couple had been involved in frequent arguments in recent months.

Since 2020, a total of 77 femicides have been recorded in Greece. The latest case is the fifth femicide of 2026. According to police data cited by Kathimerini, 2025 was the deadliest year of the period, with 19 recorded cases.
