Since last night, Israeli forces have “intercepted” — or are assumed to have intercepted — at least 40 of the 44 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which had been attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

According to the flotilla’s live tracker, 21 vessels are listed as intercepted and 19 as possibly intercepted. Communication with the convoy has been cut off, though the tracker still registers four ships sailing, with one of them reported at a distance of just nine nautical miles from Gaza.

The fate of the activists on board remains unclear. However, Israel’s foreign minister stated in a social media post that the activists are being transferred to Israel, where deportation proceedings will begin.

A protest took place yesterday at 23:00 outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens. Today, at 18:30, there is a call for a march from Eleftherias Park to the Israeli Embassy.

The boarding of the ships and detention of the activists has triggered waves of protest worldwide. In Greece, a demonstration was held at 23:00 last night outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Athens, shortly after news of the interceptions broke.

Meanwhile, the diplomatic adviser to the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament contacted Greece’s ambassador to Israel regarding the Greek vessels and nationals participating in the humanitarian flotilla. According to information relayed to parliament, the ambassador noted that by midday, the ship carrying Greek participants would have reached an Israeli port.
