The head of the Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor’s Office has ordered two urgent preliminary investigations into water quality in areas of the Thessaloniki and Halkidiki regional units, following the publication of laboratory findings and complaints from residents.
The first investigation concerns Nymfopetra, in the Municipality of Volvi, where tap water has been deemed unfit for consumption. According to information made public, elevated concentrations of uranium, fluoride and nitrates were detected in boreholes supplying the area. Residents have been using bottled water for drinking and cooking for several weeks, while authorities are also examining the delay in installing a reverse-osmosis unit intended to address the problem.

The second investigation concerns the areas of Trani Ammouda and Agios Nikolaos, in the Municipality of Sithonia in Halkidiki. Laboratory tests reportedly showed concentrations of coliform bacteria and enterococci above the permitted limits, rendering the water unsafe to drink.
The investigations will examine the causes of the water contamination, the management of the water-supply networks and whether criminal liability may arise from breaches of public-health protection measures. Representatives of the two municipalities, officials from the Volvi municipal water and sewerage company, members of residents’ associations and the relevant public-health officials are expected to be called to testify.
