One of the three people who suffered severe burns in the major fire at a heavy-vehicle repair and spare-parts workshop in Aspropyrgos died yesterday morning at KAT Hospital.

A total of 11 people were injured in the incident. Two of those who sustained severe burns were transferred to KAT Hospital, where one remains hospitalized, while the third is still being treated at “G. Gennimatas” Hospital with extensive burns across his entire body.

The fire broke out on Thursday morning and quickly spread to two neighbouring businesses, causing extensive damage. A powerful explosion occurred during the blaze, creating a large fireball.

A total of 11 people were injured, while the two surviving patients with severe burns are being treated at KAT Hospital and “G. Gennimatas” Hospital.

The Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes is investigating the exact cause of the incident. Based on the evidence gathered so far, authorities are examining the possibility that the fire started during oxy-fuel welding work. The flames reportedly spread to a propane tanker located on the premises.

The owner of the business where the fire broke out and the owner of the tanker were arrested in connection with the case. Depending on their alleged involvement, criminal charges were brought against them for causing an explosion, arson that endangered human life, serious bodily harm through negligence, and failure to comply with the required safety measures.

The investigation is ongoing, and the possibility of additional charges will be examined once the expert report has been completed.
