A European Commission document reveals that the EU is urging its member states to be ready for a potential war with Russia by 2030, according to Politico, under a plan titled “Roadmap for Defense Readiness 2030.”
“By 2030, Europe needs a sufficiently strong European defense posture to credibly deter its adversaries and respond to any acts of aggression,” the plan states. It is expected to be discussed by defense ministers late on Wednesday before being presented to the College of Commissioners on Thursday, and then submitted to EU leaders next week.
The EU plans to allocate €800 billion through European loan programs for the plan titled “Roadmap for Defense Readiness 2030.”
The plan describes Russia as a “persistent threat,” while also noting the shift in U.S. policy following Donald Trump’s return to the presidency.
European nations are rapidly boosting their national defense budgets, yet less than one-fifth of weapons purchases currently contribute to the EU’s joint defense capacity. The Commission is pressing for that share to reach 40%.
One of the plan’s main goals is to address critical gaps across nine areas — including air and missile defense, artillery systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, missiles and munitions, drones and anti-drones, ground combat, and naval capabilities. At the same time, Europe is urged to stop relying so heavily on U.S. military guarantees.
