The El Niño phenomenon currently developing in the Pacific Ocean may lead to extremely high temperatures and extreme weather events around the world.

Scientists and officials are closely monitoring conditions forming in the Pacific Ocean that could sharply increase global temperatures and break heat records over the coming year.

It is still too early to have a clear picture, but there are indications that a so-called “super El Niño” could develop this year, intensifying extreme weather phenomena worldwide. Some forecasts even suggest it could become one of the strongest El Niño events ever recorded.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, there is approximately a 66% chance that the phenomenon will reach “strong or very strong” intensity in the coming months.

Greece is also highly likely to be affected, with longer heatwaves, more days exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, and elevated nighttime temperatures.

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon caused by the warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean. It usually occurs every 2–7 years and typically lasts between 9 and 12 months.

According to the Climate Prediction Center, there is around a 66% probability that the phenomenon will intensify to a “strong or very strong” level in the months ahead.

Combined with the climate crisis, this could once again temporarily push the planet beyond the 1.5°C increase in average global temperature, while some models indicate temperatures could exceed 2°C for the first time.
