As of June 18, drivers must carry at least 16 medical items in their car’s first aid kit, according to a new decision by the Ministry of Transport. The regulation modernizes the framework and aligns it with current safety standards, significantly increasing the required items compared to the past.

The kit will include, among other things, a thermal rescue blanket, first aid scissors, skin-cleaning wet wipes, a medical face mask, first aid instructions, and more. All materials must bear CE marking and must not be expired.

Until now, the contents of the car first aid kit were defined by legislation from 1978 and included only seven basic items, mainly bandages and antiseptics.

Additionally, according to the decision, the kit must be kept in an easily accessible location inside the vehicle (e.g. not in the trunk), must not be locked, and must contain only medical supplies. It must also be regularly renewed, especially due to high temperatures, and in any case no later than every two years, to ensure its suitability. The fine for non-compliance is set at €30.

Below is the detailed list of required contents for the first aid kit:

  • Rescue blanket (thermal) (minimum dimensions: 210 x 160 cm, metallized)
  • Roll of adhesive tape (medical tape) (DIN 13019-A, 5 m x 2.5 cm)
