In a press conference at the NATO Summit yesterday, U.S. President Joe Biden said he is “determined” to remain the Democratic candidate through the November presidential elections. According to international media [1], [2], [3] the interview lasted just under an hour, with the president responding to journalists’ questions for 50 minutes.
Many of the questions centered on whether the 81-year-old can continue as President of the U.S. until January 2029 amidst growing doubts from Democratic officials. These doubts have intensified following Biden’s appearance in the televised debate with Donald Trump, which he called “that stupid mistake.”
17 Democratic members of the Congress, along with prominent Hollywood figures (G. Clooney, A. Disney, J. Cusack), are calling for his resignation.
He also said he is “the most suitable person to run for president.” When asked if he would step down if evidence suggested that his vice president, Kamala Harris, was more likely to defeat Trump, he responded that he would not relinquish his position as the Democratic candidate unless there was evidence conclusively ruling out his victory.
Throughout the interview, his primary strategy was to defend his administration’s foreign policy actions, extensively referencing U.S.-China relations and the conflict in Gaza. However, he mistakenly referred to Harris as “Vice President Trump” and addressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin.
