The United States attacked 7 Iranian ships (“speedboats”), says Donald Trump, in the Strait of Hormuz launching the “Operation Freedom” that he had announced, in order to unblock trapped ships from the closed-off area.
Iranian media deny the attack and report that two cargo ships were hit with 5 civilian dead, while at the same time Iran attacked ships in the Strait of Hormuz, with the United Arab Emirates and South Korea reporting that their ships were struck by the attacks.
Iran also attacked Fujairah, the largest port and the largest oil facility of the United Arab Emirates.
After the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, as a response to the US-Israel war in the country, 850+ ships remain trapped there.
Meanwhile, the United States states that navy destroyers and commercial ships with American flag passed through the Strait on Monday, while Iran characterised the claims as “completely false” and its military stated that it fired warning shots towards an American warship. The American military denied it.
The operation that the US launched, as The Guardian reports, does not include military escort, but aims at providing coordination and guidance for commercial navigation along a southern route through the Strait, mainly through the territorial waters of Oman.
After the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, as a response to the US-Israel war in the country, 850+ ships remain trapped there. At the same time, about 20,000 seafarers remain stranded on tankers, cargo ships, container ships and others.
