Ceasefire or “ceasefire”?

A year has passed since Friday, October 10, 2025, when the ceasefire in Gaza officially came into effect.

In practice, however, the situation is very different.

Since then, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have killed nearly 1,400 Palestinians, according to ActionAid, while Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, Doctors Without Borders) reports treating 1,200 cases* of injuries caused by violence, including explosions and gunfire, in June and July alone.

The expansion of the “Yellow Line”

The “Yellow Line”, which runs through Gaza from south to north, was presented as a temporary boundary marking the extent of the Israeli military presence, pending a full withdrawal at a later stage of the ceasefire.

In practice, however, the line is being reinforced with troops and earthworks and is gradually extending westwards, deeper into Gaza, confining residents to an ever-smaller area.

According to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Israeli forces currently control approximately 65% of Gaza.

“Unimaginable living conditions”

Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to restrict the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, including food, medicines, construction materials and fuel.

According to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), families are living in overcrowded conditions described as “unimaginable”, without adequate access to clean water, sanitation, shelter or healthcare.

These conditions contribute to the spread of disease. MSF has treated more than 11,000 cases of skin conditions, including scabies, this year, and more than 1,500 cases of chickenpox in June and July alone.

The destruction

Israel continues to destroy homes, communities and essential infrastructure in Gaza, even during the ceasefire, making the territory, which contains 61 million tonnes of rubble, increasingly uninhabitable.

Meanwhile, senior Israeli officials are promoting so-called “voluntary migration”. A dedicated government mechanism has also been established to facilitate the departure of Palestinians from Gaza, with US approval still pending.

According to Amnesty International, the genocide in Gaza slowed but did not stop after the October 2025 ceasefire.

Despite a reduction in bombardments, Amnesty International maintains that the genocide continues as Israel deliberately creates living conditions that lead to the destruction of part of the Palestinian population.

At least 14 countries, including Belgium, Ireland and Spain, as well as human rights NGOs, hundreds of scholars specialising in genocide and the Holocaust, and independent UN experts, have concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

In January 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found that Palestinians had plausible rights to protection under the UN Genocide Convention and ordered Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide. The case remains ongoing.

How many people have been killed?

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the official death toll had exceeded 74,000 by late September 2026, excluding missing persons and indirect deaths from causes such as hunger and disease.

A November 2025 study by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research estimated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had killed between 100,000 and 126,000 Palestinians since 2023. An article published in The Lancet suggested that, including indirect deaths, the toll could have exceeded 186,000 as early as 2024.

Since October 2023, 21,638 children have been killed, including more than 1,000 infants, while thousands remain missing.

Around 44,500 children have been injured and more than 21,000 have been left with permanent disabilities. Gaza also has “the highest number of child amputees in modern history”.

The proportion of women and children among Palestinians killed by Israel is more than twice that recorded in almost all other recent wars and conflicts, including those in Syria, Iraq and Sudan.

Ethnic cleansing in the West Bank

In the West Bank, the Israeli military and settlers, with state support, are stepping up attacks and restrictions that are causing the mass displacement of Palestinians, actions Amnesty International has described as “ethnic cleansing”.

According to the UN, more than 2,200 people were displaced in 2026 due to settler attacks or access restrictions imposed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

At least 90 Palestinians had been killed by September 28, 2026, bringing the total number killed since October 7, 2023, to approximately 1,136.
