A man reportedly stabbed worshipers and a prominent Christian priest during a church service in Sydney. Police have detained a suspect, and although many details are still unclear, the injuries sustained by those affected are reported to be non-life threatening. Paramedics are currently providing treatment, as reported by the Guardian.

Three days earlier, a 40-year-old man attacked passers-by with a knife at a shopping center in Sydney, resulting in six fatalities and 12 injuries before being fatally shot by a police officer. This incident stands as one of the deadliest attacks in recent decades in Australia, a country that typically experiences rare occurrences of such incidents and is renowned for its high-security levels.

The deadliest attack in the country’s history occurred in 1996 when a gunman opened fire in Tasmania, resulting in the deaths of 35 people.

The police indicated that the attacker “clearly” targeted women, with only 1 out of 6 fatalities and 2 out of 12 injuries being men. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC News that the gender disparity among the victims is “of course, worrying.”

Authorities have stated that the attack appears to be linked to the attacker’s mental illness and have initially dismissed terrorism, asserting that they believe there was “no ideological motive.” The attacker’s father informed reporters that his son had been grappling with mental illness and had recently stopped taking his medication.

Of the 12 injured, which includes a 9-month-old girl, four have been discharged from the hospital, while eight others remain in conditions ranging from serious to stable, as reported by local media.
