Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin, through a public letter, to begin face-to-face negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The proposal comes as US-mediated peace talks have reached a deadlock and as Ukraine believes that Russia has suffered losses on the battlefield in recent months.
Meanwhile, a Bloomberg report says that France, Germany, and the United Kingdom are also considering opening discussions with Russia.
Russia has intensified its air attacks against Ukraine because of Ukraine’s vulnerability to ballistic missile strikes, according to The Guardian.
Critics of engaging in negotiations with Russia at this stage, including some officials from those countries, argue that the Russian president has shown no sign of taking negotiations seriously and continues to maintain maximalist demands, including the cession of Ukrainian territories that Russia does not currently occupy.
Putin said yesterday (June 4, 2026) that Russia would strengthen its air-defense systems in response to recent Ukrainian drone attacks that have reached deep inside Russian territory.
Speaking during a meeting with media representatives, Putin acknowledged the damage caused by the Ukrainian drone strikes. “Unfortunately, some of them get through,” he said. “Russia has an air-defense system; we need to improve it, strengthen it, and we will do so.”
