Clashes between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces are continuing, raising fears of renewed civil war and opening another front in the Middle East.
At least one government soldier was killed and another seriously wounded in clashes with the Houthis in the mountainous province of Taiz, Yemeni military officials told the Associated Press.
The fighting comes amid a wave of recent Houthi attacks on government-controlled areas across the country. The Yemeni military says dozens of government soldiers have been killed since last week.
Yemen’s civil war began in 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and remains ongoing despite a truce.
The Houthis also said they carried out a drone attack on an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia, after targeting the same facility with drones last weekend. On 20 July, the group announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
Meanwhile, the US says it could maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely, increasing economic pressure on Tehran as negotiations remain stalled.
“Watch what happens, because there will be new announcements next week. We are going to implement measures on a scale unprecedented in the history of the economic isolation of a country,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview.
