The situation at the site of the major wildfire in Western Attica has improved, although the risk of new flare-ups remains if winds strengthen during the hottest part of the day. Firefighting efforts continue to focus on the area between Psatha and Loumba, where scattered active fire spots remain.
A total of 526 firefighters, 29 ground crews and 141 fire engines are operating in the area, supported by aircraft, volunteers and firefighters from Romania and France. Despite the improvement, firefighting forces remain on full alert, as small fires in forested and hard-to-reach areas could flare up again if weather conditions worsen.

The scale of the damage is already significant. According to the latest assessment by the Copernicus service, the total area burned across Attica and Boeotia has reached 134,585 stremmas (about 33,300 acres). Of that, 103,619 stremmas (about 25,600 acres) were burned around Porto Germeno and 30,966 stremmas (about 7,700 acres) around Xironomi in Boeotia.
The long-term impact is equally significant. Analysis by the National Observatory of Athens shows that six major wildfires burned more than 480,000 stremmas (about 118,600 acres) in Western Attica between 2018 and 2026, highlighting the area’s repeated exposure to large fires.
Meanwhile, authorities have stepped up enforcement of wildfire prevention regulations. At least 33 people were arrested over a five-day period, including 30 on charges of negligent arson. Investigators are examining whether the remaining cases involved deliberate arson.
