The case of the death of Vassilios Maggos [1],[2],[3] takes a new turn; as per the Order of the Criminal Investigation of Volos, prosecutions were brought against six policemen of the Police Directorate of Magnesia (four from the Crime Prevention and Suppression Teams and two from the Security Sub-Directorate).
The officers, previously charged with misdemeanors, are now facing felony charges.
They are charged with 1) torture as an accessory and aggravating factor, 2) dangerous bodily harm as an accessory and aggravating factor, 3) exposure as an accessory and aggravating circumstance, and 4) illegal detention as an accessory.
According to V.Maggos, police officers verbally abused and beat him in 2020, breaking his ribs. He died one month later.
Per the prosecutor’s order, there are serious indications of the defendants’ guilt for the acts they are accused of, the first of which is criminal. To prevent the risk of committing new crimes and to ensure their appearance in court, restrictive conditions were imposed, including a ban on leaving the country.
The victim’s father, Yiannis Maggos, announced the judicial development via Facebook.
A month before his death, Vasillis Maggos reported that he had been the victim of a savage beating by police officers in Volos during a demonstration against the burning of garbage.
The trial of the police officers has been postponed until September 20.
