On Tuesday, alongside voting for the president and representatives in the House and Senate, Americans also voted on whether the right to abortion should be protected in their state constitutions. Seven states voted in favor of protecting this right, with the most notable shift occurring in Missouri, where there had previously been an almost total abortion ban (prohibited from conception), impacting over 3 million women.

Meanwhile, Arizona also protected the right, extending the previous 15-week (4-month) limit to 24 weeks (6 months). Colorado, Montana, Maryland, Nevada, and New York are the other five states that protected this right without existing restrictions.

Twelve U.S. states completely ban abortions from conception, four ban them after six weeks, two after twelve weeks, and one after eighteen weeks.

Three states—North Dakota, Nebraska, and Florida—voted against protecting the right to abortion, thereby upholding existing restrictions in each: a near-total ban in North Dakota, a 12-week limit in Nebraska, and a 6-week limit in Florida. In Florida, 57% of citizens voted to protect the right, but a 60% threshold was required for the measure to pass.

Since 2022, when the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion in the United States (reversing Roe v. Wade), each state has had the authority to establish its own abortion laws.
