Ukraine launched a drone attack on Russia, striking the city of Nizhnekamsk, east of Moscow, killing at least 13 people, including a child, according to authorities, and injuring 39 others.
The targets were civilian and industrial facilities in the area, which is also home to one of Russia’s largest and most advanced oil refineries.
The campaign has caused significant disruption in Russia, a major oil producer, leading to long queues of cars at petrol stations. Although the Kremlin moved quickly to address the shortages and the queues have since eased in major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg, pressure on fuel supplies remains.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has struck more than 20 Russian logistics warehouses belonging to the country’s largest online retailer.
It is one of Ukraine’s deadliest attacks inside Russia, as Kyiv has systematically targeted Russian oil refineries in recent months. Ukraine’s aim is to disrupt fuel supplies to both the military and civilians.
According to The New York Times, Ukraine’s recent attacks demonstrate the country’s ability to strike far beyond the front lines of the conflict. At the same time, Moscow has targeted Ukrainian cities with heavy missile and drone attacks throughout the invasion.
Ukraine has also begun targeting Russia’s logistics infrastructure in recent weeks, striking more than 20 warehouses belonging to Wildberries, the country’s largest online retailer.
