Two charred bodies were found in the municipal district of Pitson in the municipality of Xylokastro, western Corinthia, where a large fire broke out yesterday. The bodies have not yet been identified; however, according to the Deputy Regional Governor of Peloponnese, A. Gkiolis, they are believed to be two men aged 35 and 40 who have been missing since yesterday.
The Deputy Mayor of Xylokastro, N. Giannos, told fyi.news that there is currently an active hotspot, and the destruction is significant. He adds that the burned area in western Corinthia is approximately 30 square kilometers.
Extinguishing the fire on Sunday afternoon and after midnight was difficult due to strong winds.
The firefront was so extensive that 10 112 alerts were sent to areas in western Corinthia.
Six villages in western Corinthia have been evacuated due to the fire. These are Korfiotissa, Ano Loutraki, Kallithea, Mentourgiatika, Elliniko, and Pyrgos.
The Regional Governor of Peloponnese, D. Ptchos, told “K” that at least 1,200 fires have broken out in Corinthia in recent months. He mentioned that a large forest area and some vacation homes have burned, but the fire has not entered inhabited areas.
Due to the fire, all schools in the Municipality of Xylokastro–Evrystini are closed today, Monday.
