Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, presenting the development as a decisive step towards transferring the territory to a new Palestinian administration. However, statements by Israeli officials and Hamas representatives indicate that key implementation issues remain unresolved.
The order of the steps is a central point of contention. Israel is demanding the full disarmament of Hamas and the removal of all weapons from Gaza as a prerequisite for any further process. An Israeli official said that the plan under discussion does not provide sufficient guarantees that these demands will be met.
The IDF is continuing its attacks on Gaza, which killed six Palestinians today, including two children.
Hamas, by contrast, says it will not disarm before the withdrawal of the Israeli army, which currently controls 64% of the territory, and the fulfilment of Israel’s commitments. A member of its negotiating team said that detailed agreements are needed on the timetable, implementation mechanisms and compliance guarantees.
The US plan also provides for a technocratic Palestinian government, an international security force and the reconstruction of Gaza. Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains violent. Israeli strikes killed at least six Palestinians on Thursday, including two children, according to local health officials.
