Donald Trump, in a social media post following his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York, said for the first time that Ukraine can regain its lost territories if it has the support of the European Union and NATO, citing Russia’s economic difficulties.
“After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.” Trump wrote.
Trump had previously said he intends to impose tariffs not only on Russia but also on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil.
He added: “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a War that should have taken a Real Military Power less than a week to win.”
Trump also promised to supply NATO with weapons and, speaking at the UN, repeated his call for Europe to stop buying Russian oil and gas so that the tariffs he plans to impose will have an impact. His remarks also targeted Hungary, whose leader Viktor Orbán is one of his closest allies.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy welcomed Trump’s statement, calling it a “major shift” from the US president.
