The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, originally planned for next week in Hungary to discuss a possible end to the war in Ukraine, is reportedly heading for postponement — as is the one between their foreign ministers, Marco Rubio and Sergey Lavrov, which was to take place this week.

Trump had stated on Thursday (October 16), following a phone call with Putin, that the two “agreed to hold a meeting of senior advisers next week,” and wrote on Truth Social that “the initial U.S. meetings will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with several others to be named.”

However, following a phone conversation between the two foreign ministers yesterday (October 20), CNN reported that the U.S. considers Russia has not made “enough progress,” making it likely that both meetings will be postponed. The Kremlin, by contrast, called the exchange “constructive.”

It has been more than two months since the last Trump–Putin meeting in Alaska — a nearly three-hour session that ended without agreement. Since then, the U.S. president has repeatedly urged both Kyiv and Moscow to “stop the war immediately.”

Meanwhile, when Huffington Post reporter asked White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt “who chose Hungary” as the venue, she replied, “your mother.”
