Donald Trump announced that the US from today will help in the unblocking of commercial ships that have been trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blocked.
He stated that his administration received requests from countries asking for help for the release of their ships.
He warned, at the same time, that any obstruction of the initiative titled “Project Freedom” will be faced “with determination.” However, he did not give many details about how this specific initiative will operate.
Iran made yesterday a new proposal for peace, which however Donald Trump rejected as “unacceptable”.
“These are ships from regions of the world that are not involved in any way in what is happening at this moment in the Middle East,” Donald Trump stated in a post on social media.
The announcement of the US president constitutes “a challenge to Iran” according to The New York Times, and a “bet” that it will not want to take the risk to open fire first in a confrontation with them.
Iran, however, responds that if the US enters the Strait of Hormuz, it will be attacked and stressed that the security of the Strait is exclusively its own responsibility and that the coordination of ships should be carried out by the Iranian armed forces.
“We have repeatedly stated that the security of the Strait of Hormuz is in our hands and that the safe passage of ships must be coordinated with the armed forces,” Iran stated.
