The United States is considering a new proposal that would require visitors to provide their social media activity history for the past five years in order to be allowed entry into the country.
This measure would affect citizens of dozens of countries, including Greece, who wish to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa, using the ESTA system.
The proposal was submitted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and published in the Federal Register, the U.S. government’s official journal.
Citizens of these 42 countries can visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa through ESTA.
The plan also includes collecting travelers’ phone numbers and email addresses used over the past five and ten years, respectively, as well as additional information about their family members.
Since returning to the White House in January, Donald Trump has generally strengthened border measures, citing national security as the main reason.
The CBP stated that the new changes were necessary to comply with Trump’s directive, which requires that visitors “do not hold hostile attitudes toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or foundational principles of the country.”
