This year, 624 Greek beaches were awarded the Blue Flag

Greece maintained its 2nd place worldwide this year in the Blue Flag program, collecting a total of 657 Blue Flags — the same number as in 2025 — among 51 participating countries. Of these, 624 were awarded to beaches, confirming the country’s consistent presence among the world’s top destinations for certified coastlines with high environmental standards.

Halkidiki once again emerged as the regional unit with the highest number of awarded beaches in Greece, receiving 93 Blue Flags, while Crete remained the leading region with 154 awarded beaches. In contrast, only 8 beaches in Athens received the distinction.

The Blue Flag award recognizes beaches, marinas, and tourist boats that meet specific environmental and quality criteria, such as cleanliness and safety.

Spain topped the global ranking, achieving a record-breaking 794 Blue Flags — 44 more than in 2025 — of which 677 were awarded to beaches. Turkey ranked third with 625 total distinctions.

The Blue Flag program evaluates beaches, marinas, and tourist boats based on specific environmental and quality standards, including water quality, cleanliness, swimmer safety, environmental management, and accessibility. Overall, 4,378 beaches, 747 marinas, and 158 tourist boats were awarded worldwide this year.
