Yesterday, the Supreme Court released the final list of the 31 parties set to participate in the June European Elections, omitting the Spartans and 14 other parties.
The Spartans’ exclusion, detailed in an 86-page Supreme Court decision, is based on Prosecutor Georgia Adelini’s prosecution of 11 members of their parliamentary group (excluding Vassilis Stiga) for electoral fraud. Petitions challenging the Spartans’ involvement in the European Elections were submitted to the Supreme Court by New Democracy, PASOK-KINAL, and the New Left.
An extra 14 parties were removed from the final list as they failed to submit the required fee of €20,000.
The court’s ruling also asserts that Ilias Kasidiaris, a former member of Golden Dawn’s parliament sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison for charges including leading a criminal organization and illegal firearm possession, is the “true leader” of the Spartans party.
In tandem with the investigation led by the Supreme Court prosecutor, the Electoral Court is anticipated to deliver its decision in June regarding objections raised about the legality of the Spartans’ deputies’ election. There is a high likelihood that their election will be invalidated. In this scenario, the parliamentary seats held by the Spartans would be redistributed among other parties.
