The Municipality of Megara said in an announcement that 282 fire-affected animals were rescued during the wildfire that broke out 10 days ago, of which 222 are companion animals, 14 wild animals and 46 farm animals, such as sheep.
Of the animals, 131 have already returned to their families, while 91 are being placed with foster carers for temporary accommodation and subsequently for adoption.
“The publication of this account was deliberately not made earlier. While the fire was ongoing, there was one priority: rescuing people and animals and providing meaningful support to those operating in the field. Now, after the devastating wildfire ended and several days have passed, it is considered a duty to record the effort and, above all, publicly acknowledge the contribution of the hundreds of people who gave their time, knowledge, strength and resources so that no fire-affected animal would be left without help,” the Municipality said, among other things.
The wildfire broke out in Boeotia on 31.07 and subsequently spread on 02.08 to Western Attica, affecting Megara (e.g. Agios Sarantis, Kandyli, Veniza).
Dozens of bodies, volunteers, veterinarians, animal-welfare associations and businesses were mobilised for the major rescue operation during the emergency response in the affected area.
The Municipality used the “Megareon Olympionikon” Municipal Stadium to register, treat, care for and accommodate the animals before they returned to their families.
