The tender for the installation of 1,000 AI traffic police cameras was cancelled by decision of the Ministry of Digital Governance. The cancellation of the tender, titled “Supply, installation, operation and maintenance of a network of traffic violation recording cameras,” took place on May 21, while the call for bids had been launched in early April.
The reason is that, even before bids were submitted, three companies filed appeals against the project — which has a total cost of €88 million — over its highly specific technical specifications, such as weight limits, energy consumption and additional detection functions, according to “Kathimerini.”
The ministry will relaunch the tender within 15 days, removing certain specialised specifications.
Similar appeals have also been filed regarding the tender for the creation of the information system to which the AI cameras will be connected.
Still, although the tender remained active for only a short period of time, it attracted a significant number of economic operators, as 19 companies or consortiums had expressed interest in submitting bids. Of course, this does not necessarily mean that the initial interest would eventually translate into final offers.
At the same time, according to Kathimerini’s report, the tender for the creation of the information system on which the smart cameras will operate has also entered a cycle of appeals. Initially, the three bids submitted there also faced objections regarding their scoring, a development that ultimately led the case to court.
