The Deputy Minister for Civil Protection, Christos Triantopoulos, announced he would submit his resignation once the Preliminary Inquiry Committee is formed to investigate possible criminal responsibilities related to the “filling in” of the Tempi area [1], [2].

Yesterday, PASOK submitted a proposal to Parliament for a Preliminary Inquiry Committee regarding the allegations of tampering with the accident site. Having a parliamentary or ministerial position does not prevent the establishment of the Preliminary Inquiry, which New Democracy also supports, although they reject the allegations of a cover-up.

A parliamentary or ministerial position does not prevent the establishment of the Preliminary Inquiry, which New Democracy also supports, although they reject the allegations of a cover-up.

The request from the main opposition follows the revelation that during a meeting held a few days after the accident on March 3, 2023, government pressure was allegedly applied to alter the accident site. According to the testimony of the Traffic Police director, any intervention at the collision site would have been illegal unless the judicial authorities were informed in advance and the investigator’s approval was obtained. Despite these clear warnings, the site was “filled in.”

The Preliminary Inquiry Committee will investigate whether Christos Triantopoulos was pressured for the alteration or, through his presence or position, provided political cover to those who pushed for the alteration, even though he was required to uphold the law. He describes the accusations as baseless, stating, “Everything mentioned about me is completely detached from reality and logic,” and accuses the opposition of “exploiting the tragedy.”
