As in previous internal party elections, the fyi.news team has prepared the perfect explainer for you so you can learn everything about the process of electing the next president of the third-largest parliamentary party.

The information about the process and the candidates has been gathered from the official website of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance.

The candidates are listed in alphabetical order.

When and where will the SYRIZA elections be held?

  • Sunday, November 24, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
    -A second round, if needed, will be held on Sunday, December 1.
  • At polling stations nationwide.
    -Those who are already members and those who register on the day of voting can vote at any polling station in Greece, even if they are outside their electoral district.
    -Voters abroad will cast their ballots online from Saturday, November 23 at 11:59 PM until 7:00 PM Greece time on Sunday, November 24.

 

Who can vote?

Voting rights are granted to all individuals aged 15 and above who are either members of SYRIZA or register as members on election day at the polling stations.

For residents abroad: Voting rights are granted to members and those who register as members by Thursday, November 21, at 2:00 PM Greece time.

What do you need in order to vote?

An ID card, passport, driver’s license, or health booklet.

Citizens from other countries, including the EU or non-EU countries, migrants, and those under 17 must provide a valid document proving their identity and AMKA (social security number).

Fee: A €3 membership fee is required to participate in the elections.

 

Apostolos Gletsos

He is a farmer and actor.

From 2011 to 2019, he served as mayor of Stylida. In 2015, he founded the “Teleia” party, which ran in the January 2015 elections and was dissolved in 2017. He also ran twice for the position of regional governor of Central Greece.

In 2011, as mayor of Stylida, he led the movement against tolls by demolishing the protective barriers near the Pelasgias toll booths and creating an alternative route, allowing residents of Eastern Phthiotis to pass freely without paying tolls.

Pavlos Polakis

He is a general surgeon and intensivist.

He was elected mayor of Sfakia in 2010 and 2014.

Since the January 25, 2015 elections, he has been serving as a Member of Parliament for Chania. He has also held positions as Deputy Minister of the Interior, Administrative Reconstruction, and Deputy Minister of Health.

On July 25, 2024, Stefanos Kasselakis expelled him from the SYRIZA parliamentary group but reinstated him on September 3, 2024.

Sokratis Famellos

He is a chemical engineer with a master’s degree in environmental design.

Since the January 25, 2015 elections, he has been serving as a SYRIZA Member of Parliament for the second district of Thessaloniki.

From 2016 to 2019, he was Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy.

In July 2023, he was unanimously elected president of the SYRIZA parliamentary group, a position he held until August 27, 2024.

Nikolaos Farantouris

He is a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Greece and a professor of European Law and Energy Law at Piraeus University.

In June 2024, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament.

He is a member of the European Parliament’s Budget, Environment, Energy, Public Health & Food Safety, and Constitutional Affairs Committees, where he was also appointed Coordinator.
