Multiple food price increases are boosting profits in the food retail sector, as total turnover doubled in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching €16.2 billion.

Fresh and bulk products (meat, fish, vegetables, etc.) recorded a 10.1% increase, followed by non-food items (clothing, toys, etc.) with a 9.6% rise.

According to Efimerida ton Syntakton, fast-moving consumer goods played the most significant role, accounting for 75% of turnover after a 5.9% increase in demand and sales. The categories with the highest purchase growth were snacks (+10.9%), dairy products (+9.5%), pet products (+8.7%), and non-alcoholic beverages (+8.0%), which include coffee and cocoa.

Consumer associations have requested mandatory disclosure of the producer price for each product.

Meanwhile, the only consumer-friendly measure—the mandatory disclosure of the pricing path for each product—has not been implemented, as the Joint Ministerial Decision has yet to be issued.

The law was passed by Parliament last October, facing significant opposition from all sides due to the difficulty of applying the provision for disclosing the pricing path for fresh products, which would be activated only by a decision of the Ministry of Development and in exceptional cases.
